Words Words Words
This week Chinese President Hu Jintao said Khartoum "should push forward the peacekeeping mission and political process in a balanced manner, quickly restore political negotiations and strive to ensure the talks achieve substantial progress".Chinese oil revenues continue to underwrite the atrocities in Darfur. China is also shielding Sudan at the UN Security Council and advising the Sudanese military. Beijing has long refused to use its leverage with Sudan, invoking national sovereignty and a policy of non-intervention. But their position is inexcusable- genocide and mass atrocities trump sovereignty. Still, a year ago these words from Beijing would have been unthinkable.
Bottom line-China has just signed eight new economic agreements with Khartoum.
