Last July, the UN Security Council unanimously passed UNSC Resolution 1769 authorizing 26,000 peacekeepers and civilian police to Darfur. At that time, China emphasized the leadership role it played in passing the resolution.
Now, only one third of those troops have arrived, and the deadlines for full deployment have passed. In fact, the humanitarian and security situation has deteriorated dramatically in recent months, and Sudan has placed every conceivable obstruction in the path of an effective deployment of UNAMID (UN Mission in Darfur) to such a degree that it is now entirely unclear whether it can ever be successful.
Write to Liu Guijin, the Chinese Special Envoy to Darfur, and the Chinese Mission to the UN and urge China to insist that Khartoum stop bombing and killing its own citizens and demand the full deployment of a protection force for civilians and the humanitarians trying to assist them.
Add your voice to the growing chorus of people calling on China, and all those with influence, to bring an end to the genocide in Darfur that has now entered its sixth year.
