While UN Peacekeepers have failed to protect vulnerable civilians in Congo, we must not lose sight of the fact that the real culprits are the various militia, Rwandan Hutus, Rwandan Tutsi, Congolese MaiMai, and the Congolese Army ( whether they admit it it not). Rape victims I spoke with in the DRC have cited all of these groups but the most brutal, according to the women I spoke with, are the Hutus who, after gang raping a woman or child would then destroy their insides with a bayonet and/ or pound their legs to pulp with rifle butts.
