I took these photos in the jebel Marra mountains in 2006

jebal Marra children plead for protection. Nobody is listening

men in jebel Marra hold up a sign, STOP KILLING CIVILIANS. DISARM JANJAWEED. WELCOME PEACEKEEPING FORCES OF UN.

Shame on everyone. That was 2006. No UN peacekeeping forces ever came to Jebel Marra to protect the people and the UN just keeps quiet

The Jebel Marra mountains are magnificent. The range lies in the remote center of Darfur. It isn't easy to get there. I flew in with UNICEF on a helicopter. There we were met by people begging for protection. The people in jebel Marra are loyal to Abdul Wahid, head of the SLA , and so the mountains have been targeted by the Sudanese military ,especially throughout 2010. Since Sunday villages have been the focus of intensified attacks. Government forces, including ground troops, bombers and helicopters have burned four villages, killed 27 civilians and sent thousands more fleeing.

Reached by phone in Paris, SLA spokesman Ibrahim al-Helwu told Reuters. "This week there has been very big fighting. All this time the government air forces are bombarding the areas all the day and today this morning ... four villages were burned ... They killed 27 civilians. It is their campaign of ethnic cleansing."
These days reporters are not permitted in Darfur.. The aid agencies that have not been expelled are unable to speak out. There has been no comment from the United Nations about the on going attacks - probably because the UN reps in Khartoum now release information only AFTER it has been vetted by the perpetrators, the Sudanese regime, an outrageous situation that makes the UN complicit in the ongoing atrocities
